Since 1997, we are instructors worldwide who deliver online courses worldwide and live, in-person courses in the Seattle area. Our mission is to lower the cost and widen the access to first-rate education, with ever increasing student and instructor satisfaction.
Our instructors are either tenured professors who've adapted their courses for noncredit delivery, or working professionals who teach their expertise. Our instructors are generally considered leaders in their fields, and often are published. Our instructors come from all over the world, and students have enrolled in our courses from over 25 countries. We truly engage in the free trade of education worldwide.
We instructors decide how to best teach, when, where and at what price, and select the means best suited to delivery of the content. Within the online course area, we are leading edge instructors who use the internet to teach in ways not otherwise available; we use the internet for mass-customization instead of mass-distribution. You keep the class revenue. Also you, not any school, has the ownership of your courses.
We welcome new instructors from anywhere on earth. To be successful at Seattle Teachers' College you must bring your own courses, your own means for delivery of your content, a desire for active contact with your students, a passion for education and a joy for delivering it. If you are new to teaching, we will get you started. We especially esteem writers. If you are not a writer, we can help fix that too. We assist teachers in getting published and earning royalties second to none. If you are new to teaching, make sure you read Perish Your Publisher. You can find a free copy here.
The presumption is you wish to teach where and when you like, at what compensation you set, and become published, as an independent contractor. As an independent contractor, your agreement with us is non-exclusive. Feel free to teach anywhere else you like, indeed we encourage that. If you desire to be self-employed either part or full time in the honorable profession of education, desire to be published, and rely solely on student satisfaction for tenure, then we offer a means to attain just compensation for your efforts in education. You design the course, you line up the venue, you teach the course, you own the course. By taking over this responsibility, the overall cost of a course is less for the student, but you keep all of the revenue from student fees. At once we lower the cost, widen the access to education, yet you earn more. It is self-employment, so you must have a passion for your topic and its problems, yet find joy in working with students. You become what the Germans call privatdozent: in essence a self-employed independent contractor literally in business for yourself. That's right, you make enough money to buy your own "healthcare."
We follow a fairly standard academic structure, even adapting the terms of a college. Everyone teaches.
There is a name for the organizing principle we operate under. It is called subsidiarity. In essence, the individual is completely free to operate as long as they don't contradict what standards we've set up. For example, an instructor may change his course content for the future at any time, but he may not arbitrarily decide not to teach this quarter after offering to do so. Our instructor agreement will lay out the quality pledge and at Seattle Teachers College, Inc. websites, as amended from time to time. If there is ever a dispute between an instructor and a student, another instructor will arbitrate. If either party wishes to appeal a decision, the board of directors will render the final decision.
We are broken into groups by academic discipline, and new departments may be formed at any time.
What Students Get.
Seattle Teachers College offers students a school with a mission to lower the cost and widen the access to education while ever improving student and instructor satisfaction. Our teachers are dedicated to this proposition. We are developing the metrics and data to substantiate this, and we'll feature it in every catalog and on our website what we have valid and reliable results. The data is essentially student feedback.
We are motivated to maximize your student enrollments. By applying the science of statistics and probability to the promotion of courses, we will be the best recruiter of students for instructors. In any event the student pays you directly whatever fee you set.
For a $10 registration fee, a student gets confirmation they are in the class, plus a map and directions to your course, along with emergency contact information, and any other class preparation information you wish to impart, which they print on their home computer with their receipt. The receipt reminds the student of the course fee to be paid directly to you. They have the option of having us print and mail the same. Thereafter, they will get early bird announcements and what benefits of association we may offer from time to time.
What You Get.
Most teachers desire to get a class enrollment list, show up, deliver the content, get paid and leave off. The challenges of fielding inquiries, managing enrollments, worrying about overbooking and communicating last minute changes detract from the enjoyment of teaching.
By listing your course with Seattle Teachers College at no cost to you you will have professional enrollment management with these specific benefits:
24/7 enrollments services. Who, what, where, when, how to get there and your fees are listed on the site. We take only as many enrollments as you allocate. You set at what point you want to be cautioned for selling-out your class (five positions left?). All reporting is real-time, so five weeks or five minutes before class you may have a current class list.
You student's receipt is chock-a-block full of information. If you have printed out and airline boarding pass at home recently, you'll notice the page not only contains the boarding pass (a class confirmation in our case) but weather reports, maps, directions, instructions, coupons and who knows what else you can dream up. In general, you will have appear on this page answers to the questions for which you most often get calls.
There are advantages for teachers in critical mass: we share best practices and opportunities, we cross sell classes. We may get group discounts. And dealing with the public has its challenges, any problem one of us experiences may be of interest to all.
If you need a venue to teach, we facilitate those as well.
Finally, as a paid service, we publish a paper catalog distributed to 120,000 households promoting Seattle Teacher College courses. Currently the fee is $99.00, and you can find more information here.
Standards.
You make the following pledge and join other instructors doing likewise:
1. To teach course(s) listed with Company.
2. To run course(s) regardless of enrollment levels (no minimums), or otherwise satisfy your enrollees.
3. To update calendar copy as necessary for any course(s) listed.
4. To prepare instructional materials for any course(s) listed, as appropriate.
5. To maintain independent contractor status.
6. To solicit conscientiously student feedback forms from every student.
7. To provide immediate customer service to any student enrolled in your course, and to forward to the President at the Company any complaint or issue at any time a student requests further review.
8. You endeavor to get published. WE encourage and assist there.
So everything you promise in your course description must be delivered at the price quoted. Having issued that caveat, instructors are free to be creative in generating further revenue.
For example, some instructors have the required course text linked to Amazon.com and enjoy the commissions Amazon.com pays instructors (although some instructors negotiated the very best price from Amazon.com and then pass it on to the student.) Feel free to sell anything you like at YOUR website, just do not make anything there an "added requirement" of a course through us.
Keep in mind although we hope to help you build a career as a teacher and writer here, you may use us merely to add to your present marketing efforts, by including registrants we gain for you in classes already viable.
Participation is progressive, and you have the option of "do-it-yourself" or you may select from our preferred providers any element you need to serve your students. Not only do we promote you here, we show you how to contract with as many schools as you like to teach. We show you how to get paying students for your classes, and how to get you published.
If you feel you need a "how to" course on teaching, please review our selection of courses for the appropriate class.
