The mission of Seattle Teachers College is to lower the cost and widen the access to education, while ever improving student and instructor satisfaction.
Our school offers an encounter with the good, the true and the beautiful in every field.
Our instructors are what the Germans call privat dozent, scholars qualified to teach but otherwise free of any contractual obligations. Our entire faculty are independent contractors.
To fulfill our mission, we merely aggregate advertising for the instructors and broker teaching venues. By applying the science of statistics and probability to the promotion of courses, we will be the best recruiter of students for instructors. Although we focus on the live, in person “sage on the stage” instruction, we are second to none in our offerings of internet-based courses.
We believe scholars should be published authors. Seattle Teachers College Press is in the business of getting scholars content into media, leveraging the important work of Google, Amazon and Adobe to this end and worldwide resources to assist in this process.
Quality is assured by student feedback, which is publicly available.
Our teachers are rated by the opinions that matter, that is the students and the instructors' peers who have taken a course from the instructor in question.
Since we merely advertise, the student pays the instructor directly and the instructor keeps all of the fees. We are not, nor will ever seek, accreditation. With this structure the entire administrative overhead is removed from the cost structure. and not borne by students and taxpayers.
The model is not certainly not new, or unique. The model of students paying instructors directly is that of the medieval university, and to this day the master’s robe has the elongated sleeve designed to receive the students fee after lecture. Education comes from the Latin ‘to lead out” and this model certainly led the West out of the dark ages and into the enlightenment of the renaissance. And for 35 years in Seattle the good Associated Students of the University of Washington have used this model at the Experimental College.
